Cruz vs Avalos Live

Saturday is a big day for boxing with the latest World Boxing Super Series tournament match-up, plus two separate cards from Premier Boxing Champions. The big PBC card is on Showtime – we’ll have separate coverage on that card this week. But here, we’re focused on the Fox card, which features the bigger names, but also the more one-sided matches. Here’s a fight by fight preview.

Cruz vs Avalos Fight Live

The main event here features arguably the best 126 pounder in the world – Leo Santa Cruz. Known for his high-volume punching style, Santa Cruz is a joy to watch in the ring when he’s on, as he is capable of bringing serious excitement. He was on the rise for years, but also received criticism for a perceived soft schedule. He changed that in 2015 when he defeated Abner Mares in a great technical performance. Last July, he suffered his first loss, dropping a close decision to Carl Frampton, only to avenge that loss in January in his last fight. He’s ranked #1 in the division by Ring Magazine and defends his WBA Super Featherweight title here. Avalos is an opponent with no real reason to be in here. He on a 2-3 run, with no singularly impressive win on his resume. This is a ridiculous mismatch.

Speaking of Mares, here he is in the co-main event. Mares sat at the top of the division for a time, but suffered an upset flash KO loss to Jhonny Gonzalez back in 2013. He’s 4-1 since, with his only loss coming to Santa Cruz. Mares has looked good as of late, but he’s seemed just a step off and a bit vulnerable ever since that Gonzalez loss. He comes in off a very good win over Jesus Cueller – honestly, he’s looked good in his fights for the past few years. But it’s hard to shake the feeling that something has been missing. He’s #4 for Ring Magazine, and defends his own WBA title here. Gutierrez is an opponent with no real reason to be in here. He’s fought almost exclusively in Mexico, and there suffered his first loss last June. He had a rebound win last October, and has been inactive for a year. This is a slightly less ridiculous mismatch. But not by much.
